Our Community Place

. . . personal growth . . . peaceful community . . .

The following are organizations that have expressed interest in using the OCP building. As of now, these organizations have no official ties to OCP, and each of them functions under its own governance, completely separate from OCP.

Early Church

Some folks involved with OCP, including our founding board member Ron Copeland, are starting a Mennonite Congregation that plans to use the building for a weekly public service. The congregation plans to hold its first public service on the first Sunday morning of Advent, November 30, 2008.  This group does not yet have a website, but feel free to contact the church at earlychurchva@yahoo.com or Ron at brothercopey@verizon.net or 540-433-7738 if you have any questions.

Birth Matters, VA

Birth Matters is a statewide organization with local groups of parents and professionals who share information, offer support, and affirm the rights of women and families to make informed choices throughout the childbearing years. On the web at www.birthmattersva.org. Also, contact Melaine Copeland at melaine@birthmattersva.org with any questions.

Skyline Literacy Coalition

Skyline Literacy Coalition is dedicated to teaching adults in the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County area by providing tutoring to adult learners who want to improve their reading, writing, and English speaking skills. Trained volunteers work with learners in a one-on-one or small group setting, at a time and place convenient for both. The folks at Skyline have already begun to work with us to locate adults who we know who lack reading and writing skills and who would like tutoring. We have envisioned together that OCP can be a “sub-station” for their organization. Check them out at www.skylineliteracy.org.

New Community Project

With the help of Tom Benevento, New Community Project has helped erect a bike repair shop on OCP grounds. The idea is to put in a couple hours repairing a bike and ride off on one of your own. Their mission is to help us all live "more sustainably with the earth and more fairly with its people". Their work includes:

  • sponsoring Learning Tours to places where God's people and/or God's creation are struggling.
  • providing speakers and workshop leaders for colleges, congregations, youth events, and other gatherings.
  • placing Solidarity Workers in other countries and cultures.
  • offering a variety of engaging print and web-based resources.
  • creating a support network for like-minded souls, with a special interest in empowering youth and young adults.
